Antenatal HIV screening

The Antenatal HIV Screening team performs about 9000 first antenatal blood tests every year. When first antenatal blood is ordered it will test the pregnant woman for syphilis, hepatitis B, rubella, full blood count, Rhesus factor and HIV unless tests are specifically excluded.

This applies to requests from both Pathlab and the Waikato DHB laboratories. A brief discussion with the woman regarding the nature of the currently recommended antenatal blood tests (including HIV) is always required.
