Vision and hearing technicians

Hearing and vision technicians visit pre-school, primary and intermediate schools on a regular basis to carry out screening tests on all Waikato children.

These tests are important to identify hearing problems and vision problems. They are part of the National Vision Hearing Screening Programme which schedules tests for all children at specific ages between 3 and 11.


Screening tests in:

  • audiometry (hearing)
  • tympanometry (middle ear function test)
  • vision (distance visual acuity)
  • colour vision.

Referral information

The screening tests are scheduled on an annual basis with no need for referral.

Requests for testing children and young people outside the targeted age groups is available to all parents / caregivers / education or health professionals.
