E Hoki Ki Tō Ūkaipō Wānanga 2014 - Māori Health Excellence & Innovation was held at Tūrangawaewae marae, Ngāruawahia on the 29th and 30th May 2014.
The wānanga followed the success of E Hoki Ki Tō Ūkaipō Wānanga hosted in the Waikato in May 2012. The focus of this years’ wānanga was to promote and develop best practice and innovative Māori models in the areas of cervical and breast screening, SUDI prevention, breastfeeding and tobacco cessation.
A secondary focus is to grow Māori leaders in the topic areas of the wānanga and build a united and strengthened workforce across the Midland region. Designed with the Midland’s Māori workforce in mind, E Hoki Ki Tō Ūkaipō Wānanga 2014 featured a mix of presentations, workshops and activities on topics relating to breast and cervical screening, SUDI, breastfeeding and tobacco cessation.
The wānanga was intended to provide participants with practical skills and knowledge that will better enable them to support and grow our whānau.
The organising committee acknowledges that the It’s Not Ok korero from Vic Tamati may have unearthed strong feelings and emotions for some wananga participants due to past or present experiences of family violence or sexual abuse.
